FAQ for Carnegie Hall

How Should I Format My Message for the Application?

Video only! We only accept virtual submissions in video form. The video can be recorded professionally or it can be done with your phone. Yet, we do judge on quality. Be sure that you film your piece with proper lighting and that it is loud enough for a listener to hear properly. We do not accept audio only submissions. If you do include aesthetic visuals in your film, the visuals need to be used at a minimum. We encourage aesthetics to enhance your delivery, but be sure your visual choices do not become distracting to your message. The main focus should be your presentation speaking and performing directly on camera. Do not use background music or props for your message. The file name should only include your first name and last name and the form of art you are showcasing. Example: JohnSmith_Poetry or AmyDouglas_Monologue. We recommend for your video to be three minutes or less. Do not exceed three minutes.

When is the deadline to submit an application?

The deadline to submit an application is September 9, 2023 at 5:00 PM EST.

Can I Submit Work From Another Author – Such As Recitations?

We only accept original work written by the poet or speaker who is submitting the piece. Do not submit work written by another speaker or poet. Any plagiarized work will be automatically disqualified.

Do I Retain the Rights to My Work?

By submitting your piece in the application format, you are giving us permission to review and potentially publish your content. However, copyright for the original work remains with the performer.

I Have Questions About the Carnegie Hall Opportunity. What are the Carnegie Hall Requirements?

The performance opportunity will take place in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. To win the Carnegie Hall Grand Prize, you must be available for the live showcase for the entire day (including rehearsal) on October 14, 2023. You are expected to provide costs for your transportation and hotel stay. The musical presentation is from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. You are required to stay for the entire show after you open the show. You should make yourself available for the entire day (Oct. 14). You are required to attend all three coaching sessions with Cynthia Giles in preparation for your opening. Cynthia Giles is the Master of Ceremonies for the Carnegie Debut and a public speaking/spoken word poetry coach. You will receive training and guidance for opening the show from her. Even though you will have freedom of expression and creativity to open the show, your work will require approval from the production team to be showcased. You will be opening up the show with a poetic piece that you believe will inspire the audience.
